And the answers are…

  1. In 1963, a 500-foot pier was constructed on the ocean across from the Biltmore Hotel. The pier was a complete disaster, however, because of the adverse currents and tides. Without a breakwater, the surf was too choppy, making boarding and disembarking from the boats a dangerous proposition. As a result, the pier was abandoned soon after it was built and torn down years later.
  2. Democrat Alvin Weigand, California State Senator from 1962 to 1967, took over ownership of the San Ysidro Ranch in 1935 and owned it for almost 40 years. During his many years as the master proprietor of The Ranch, Weigand attributed his success to the special attention he gave in offering guests cloistered tranquillity from the outside world. Distinguished luminaries, movie stars, corporate tycoons and future presidents all could relax at The Ranch secure in the knowledge the resort would never be the source of any publicity about them.
  3. Located northeast of the Bird Refuge at the intersection of Channel Drive and Hot Springs Road, a stone lion’s head streams water into a horse trough basin and people "slack their thirst" on the other side of the only known specially designed fountain designed "for both man and beast." Dr. Parks selected the location for the fountain because it would be helpful to the considerable number of horseback riders who used to ride from Montecito to the beach.
  4. It’s the cove on the south side of Fernald Point. During the mid-1860s starving livestock were herded by vaqueros to the Montecito lowlands for butchering and loading on trading ships that plied the California coast. What was left became hog fodder or was dumped into the ocean. It is commonly believed that this attracted sharks and thus lead to the name Shark’s Cove.
  5. Don Messick, the voice of Papa Smurf, Scooby-Doo and Ranger Smith lived on Humphrey Road for more than 30 years.
