Dining, Shopping and Theater Hopping

Whats Hot

You should taste this…

Wine Cask is located in historic El Paseo (813 Anacapa St. 805/966-9463), where artist Edward Borein had a small shop in the early 1920s. Today, we buy vin ordinaire and vintage bottles where Borein used to do his etchings, but it’s not just the history of the place that lures us history buffs. The dining is great, too. Brunch in its courtyard is one of our favorite ways to begin a great Saturday or Sunday. If you’ve never been to the Wine Cask, we recommend you try the Thursday Tastings each week from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Big art, big band, big relief…

If you love art like we do, you won’t want to miss the fifth annual Coast Village "Autumn Fest" Artwalk, 5 to 8 p.m. Fri., Sept. 4 on both sides of three blocks on Coast Village Road. Benefiting Direct Relief, a locally-based medical aid organization, and the Coast Village Business Association, more than 75 local and regional artists will display their paintings and sculpture. Bruce Solow’s 15-piece big band will play hits from the 30s, 40s and 50s. For ticket information call Linda Belding at 969-0510.

For gardeners and opera lovers alike…

In 1941, a well-known Polish opera singer, Mme. Ganna Walska, purchased a Montecito estate, named it Lotusland, and promptly became the stuff of local legend. Her life not only endowed Montecito with an unrivaled botanical treasure chock-full of interesting growing things, it has inspired a new musical, "The Would-Be Diva," set to run two weekends, Aug. 28-30 and Sept. 4-6 at the Center Stage Theater, in the Paseo Nuevo mall. For ticket information, call 963-0408.

And to wear to the theater…

Fibula features the special jewelry designs of Daniel Gibbings and is located on De La Guerra Street, named after José de la Guerra, probably the most influential Spanish-born resident of Santa Barbara back in the days when America took over California. We could hardly believe our eyes at Fibula’s collection of South Sea Pearls, featuring rare and unusual colors like golden, blue and pistachio. These beauties are set in strands and in settings of 20K gold and platinum. Daniel recently returned from Sri Lanka and India and his souvenirs include faceted ruby and sapphire beads and large, fancy-colored sapphires in peach, pink and yellow. All of these jewels will be incorporated into Daniel’s newer platinum designs. You can visit Daniel and Laura Gibbings at Fibula at 2 East de la Guerra.

Our favorite small shop with a big collection…

Our idea of a great afternoon is tea at the Biltmore (1260 Channel Dr. 805/565-2995) overlooking the ocean after we check out the beautiful sculpture and other fine art at Hunter Unlimited, located off the main lobby of the luxurious Montecito hotel. If you have never seen the acrylic creations of Frederick Hart, creator of the Vietnam war memorial, Three Soldiers, do yourself a favor and stop by. Hart’s spiritual pieces will give you goosebumps. The gallery owner, Scott Hunter, is quite personable and will happily give you help, believe it or not, in meeting Feng Shui requirements for a harmonious home.
